First times.
Elena Ferrante is my favorite author currently. I am reading a book of hers, which is a compilation of ~50 articles that she wrote for the Guardian newspaper in 2018/19. Each of them is written on a theme selected by the Editors of the newspaper.
The first theme was "the first time". Elena writes beautifully about how we tend to over-glamorize our first loves (amongst other first times).
I look at it a bit differently. In some cases atleast, the first time represents a departure from the current path, a break from tradition. When I look at the first times as times of shift, rather than events, I believe that there are no events more momentous than those.
The first time I disobeyed my parents, the first time I made a decision for myself, the first time I stood up for myself, the first time I experienced sadness (while watching the Tamil movie Anjali), the first time away from home, the first time you realize that your parents are only human.
