Bud Light Seltzer

Mass market beers (Budweiser, Miller, Coors etc) are losing market share in the US to craft beers. The craft beer industry has challenges of its own with an over-proliferation of craft brewers. During a recent trip to Asheville, I learnt that there are more than 70 within driving distance of Asheville.

This has been (mostly) great for beer consumers, with the only issue being the constant introduction of yucky variants including beers flavored with strawberry, avocado etc.

What is interesting though is the fact that beer is actually losing volume as an overall category. Beer as a choice of alcoholic beverage has dropped from 60%+ to ~50% in a decade with wine and spirits growing. Spiked seltzers are all the rage right now.

Which brings me to the topic of the post - Budweiser has recently launched Bud Light Seltzer. Of all the dumb marketing moves by Budweiser over the years, this has to be the dumbest.

Do they really want to associate Bud Light with soda water when the biggest issue they have is with the perception that their beer is "watered down"?
