The Divine Computer

If there is a supreme being, and lets assume that every action of a human being is controlled by Him. If He runs the whole of earth with his computer, what kind of computer would it be ? What kind of processor speed would it have ?

Lets drill down to the lowest level of a human being - The cell. There are 50 trillion cells in the average human body (Source: Yahoo).

What are the fundamental states of a cell ?

• At Rest
• Moving - (4 Directions - Left, Right, Up, Down, 6 Modes - simple diffusion, osmosis, filtration, active transport, endocytosis, and exocytosis)
• Reproduce - Mitosis, Meiosis
• Energy Production
• Transport of molecules
• Waste disposal
• Store genetic material
• Fight

Thats a total of 32 states, at every instant ...

Processing Speed

So at any instant, you have to be able to control determine the state (out of 32 options) for 50 trillion cells * 6.5 billion people.

Thats 50 trillion * 6.5 billion calculations = 325 billion teraflops

The fastest supercomputer right now is IBM's BlueGene (70.72 teraflops).

So, God would need 5 Billion of these super-computers !!

Memory

Lets assume the you store 3 seconds worth of cell states in ROM and 1 second worth in RAM ...
Each cell needs 6 bits to store its state, as the binary equivalent of 32 = 100000

This means that God would need 50 trillion * 6.5 billion * 6 * 3 bits of ROM, which is equal to 700 Million Million Gigabytes of ROM, which is about 10 Trillion times the hard disk space on your PC.

And God would need 240 Million Million Gigagytes of RAM

And this is just for us human beings. Imagine how much more computing power is needed for the rest of the natural world ...
