Re-use of Cinema Sets

I saw a beautiful Italian movie today - Malena. I am constantly amazed by the range of emotions that European cinema has vis-a-vis Hollywood .. I think that Indian cinema is much closer to European cinema than American cinema ....

Anyway, the movie was about a boy becoming a man, during World War II Italy ... And I was struck by the beauty of the sets that were used. This led me to think about all of the sets that are constructed for every movie .. I know that most of them only have a front piece, but I started thinking about whether it would be possible for the film industry to tie up with real estate developers ... And then create a set comprising real houses and buildings, which could be sold at the end of the movie - Or even be used to house the poor ?

What do you guys think ?

with so many movies coming up and the population on the rise ..in the end there will be no place for building movie sets is what i think.............its better for them to reuse the place for building different sets instead.....

Your idea has already been implented by the Olympic Games and Asian Games Committee! They built these sports villages which is later sold as apartments.

Hi Kiruba, Welcome to my site .. I think what you are referring to is a bit different from my idea, but good point - re-use in any way is good ! After all, Indians have been recycling for several centuries now ...

Of course, with the advent of multimedia applications, maybe we wont need sets anymore in a few years ..

Let them atleast clean, repair and paint the roads to shoot movie scenes instead flying all the way to austria to do it - same budget, cleaner roads. With the number of movies where they dance in the streets, we should soon have a lot of clean, well painted, well paved roads.

I once read an article on how it was actually cheaper to shoot abroad, because foreign governments give movie makers huge subsidies and also because film makers do not have to hire the minimum number of "junior artistes" - extras mandated by the local union.
