Charity begins at home.
India is a poor country and there is drastic disparity in the country. There are several individuals and corporations that perform awesome social service through NGO's or charitable foundations.
There is the Tata foundation, Birla foundation, Mahindra foundation etc.. each of which is formed with a large, generous budget to take up developmental activities. And I laud their efforts.
However, sometimes I wonder whether one shouldnt look closer to home ... I have a servant at home who comes in for 2 hours a day and sweeps, washes, cleans etc ...
I pay her the widely accepted Chennai standard (Rs. 750/month). 750 bucks !! Thats so, so low. How can someone survive on that ? I do contribute to some charities, but I wonder whether I shouldnt just pay my servant double and improve her quality of life rather than improving the quality of life of someone miles away from me ...
Why is it that industrial groups spend crores on charity and underpay their own workers ? And why do I contribute to charities and underpay my worker ?
Car donation services are great
ways to donate money to charity and even if you do not have an old car to
give to charity you could also
donate something
else like donating your
boat or donate
an RV.

I mean, what they save by haggling isnt going to make them rich, but that same amount will more than likely be of use to the vendor! Why try to put one over on someone who's obviously poor? And then some ladies even boast about it... pathetic!
Some of us bargain big time for trivial amounts of money with poor vendors,maid-servants etc.,
At the same time, we dont mind paying truck loads of money for overpriced branded goods.
It makes sense to begin charity at & around one's home and also see the immediate difference it makes in the lives of these people.
While i dont disagree with the need for organized charity, i do believe that there's a great joy in helping the really needy old people.
As they say, DHARMAM THAILAI KAKUM.
we see people who are too busy to be a good father/mother to their own child but volunteer at charities etc...
i once got my cheppals repaired by a cobbler in chennai. he was telling me how his neighbor doesn't take care of his parents and wife but is going to sabhari malai to get good karma!
I insist on not bargaining with the poor lady who sells vegetables etc... People bargain a lot to reduce one rupee and then they'll probably waste thousands of rupees making phone calls etc. Even without denying ourselves the luxuries, we can have a wallet a little bit more open to the hard workers instead of "tring to get good karma" by donations & offerings.
I hope ur post will make a lot of people to think! All the best!!
The point is really not about how many rupees etc, its more about how we sometimes forget to help the people close to us and think up grand schemes to help the world !! - And often lose all hope and do nothing !
