Netflix saves the USPS star

The United States Postal Service (USPS) is a much-maligned organization. No American I have met trusts it completely, and FedEx and UPS have grown very quickly at the expense of USPS.

I have always had quite a good opinion about the USPS, especially their post office clerks. The guys at my post office (Avent Ferry Shopping Center, Raleigh, North Carolina) have to be the most cheerful clerks in the world. They probably say "Good day", "How are you", "Not bad", "Do you want any stamps", "Is there anything fragile, liquid or perishable" a thousand times a day !

However, with the advent of email and e-greetings, the mail volume in the US had been shrinking slowly and since 2000, there was a reduction of about 6 billion pieces of mail per annum. However, the trend changed in 2004, and I believe that some of the main causes for that are eBay and Netflix. I estimate that Netflix alone is probably between 500 Million and a Billion pieces of mail.

Its good to see that - Because, it shows that things always happen in cycles - The very internet that took away a lot of USPS' business is now resuscitating USPS through increased mail volume.
